Spot watch!

I recently got together with a few fellow CSE students here at MSU and wrote up a proposal for Microsoft’s smart watch RFP program. It seemed like a long shot, but what do you know….they accepted it! I’m not going to go into details yet, but I will say that we’re planning on making a game that brings together a SPOT watch, a client app, and a dedicated server using .NET technologies to provide a unique experience for our users. It’s quite ambitious, so it should be fun.

The game is primarily based on the PC, but the SPOT watch will be used for “training” (to build up skill points). A few screen shots that were included in the proposal are here.

If you don’t know what a SPOT watch is, you’re not alone! Channel9 has a video of the device here.

My first impression of the device was that it’s pretty useless. My phone can do pretty much everything it can do and more…BUT you could say the same thing about a regular watch (phone has the time). The point of the SPOT watch is similar to RSS. It brings content that you are interested in directly to your wrist. Most of the apps in the video above seemed pretty lame/simple but I see much more potential here. Hopefully our game will hit up the younger crowd a bit.

Does anyone actually have one of these, and wanna comment about it? We’re suppose to get one as soon at MS gets around to telling us something other than accepting our proposal.

Congrats, dude. Sounds like a good way to score some Microsoft swag. Maybe you’ll become a thousand-airre when you finish. ;)
